Why ASL Is Recruiting Care Home Chefs Across Greater Manchester
Care homes can require additional catering support for many different reasons.
Annual leave, sickness, recruitment gaps and unexpected staff shortages can all leave a kitchen needing an experienced chef who can step in and maintain the meal service.
This is where specialist relief chefs become particularly valuable.
When ASL supplies a chef to a care setting, the requirement isn’t simply for someone capable of cooking.
The chef needs to understand the care environment.
Residents may have individual requirements involving:
- Food allergies or intolerances
- Dysphagia
- IDDSI texture levels
- Fortified meals
- Modified portions
- Nutritional requirements
- Vegetarian diets
- Cultural or religious diets
- Personal food preferences
- Dementia-related eating difficulties
- Other documented dietary requirements
An experienced care-home chef should recognise the importance of checking and following the dietary information supplied by the individual home.
That specialist experience is a central part of what we’re looking for.

Care Home, Residential & Nursing Home Chef Recruitment – ASL Catering Agency
What We Are Looking For
We’re looking for chefs who can represent ASL professionally and provide dependable catering support to our clients.
Substantial Care Home Chef Experience
Applicants need genuine previous experience working as a chef within care homes, nursing homes or residential-care settings.
This is essential.
A chef may have many years of experience in restaurants, hotels, pubs or events, but care-home catering involves additional responsibilities.
For these opportunities, mainstream hospitality experience alone isn’t enough.
We need chefs who already understand the care environment and can adapt confidently to a different care-home kitchen.
Your Own Reliable Transport
Own reliable transport is essential.
Our clients can be located in different parts of Manchester and Greater Manchester, and assignment times may not always correspond conveniently with public transport.
Being able to travel independently also gives our chefs greater flexibility when suitable assignments become available.
Applicants should therefore be prepared to travel to different client locations within a reasonable distance.
Enhanced DBS
Applicants should hold an appropriate current Enhanced DBS certificate, subject to ASL Catering Agency’s normal recruitment and compliance checks.
Working within care environments requires appropriate pre-employment screening, and ASL will explain the relevant requirements during registration.
Right to Work in the UK
Applicants must have the appropriate right to work in the UK and successfully complete the necessary pre-employment documentation and checks.
Reliability and Professional Conduct
Reliability is particularly important in relief catering.
If a care home has requested an agency chef because its regular chef is unavailable, another failure to attend can leave the home in an extremely difficult position.
We therefore expect our chefs to demonstrate:
- Excellent reliability
- Good punctuality
- Professional presentation
- Clear communication
- Strong hygiene standards
- Respect for residents
- Respect for permanent staff
- Ability to follow site procedures
- Confidence working independently when appropriate
ASL works with PAYE chefs rather than freelance or self-employed chefs.

Essential Training for Care Home Chefs
Experience comes first, but appropriate training is also important.
For the chefs we’re currently recruiting, three particularly important training areas are:
✔ Food Safety & Hygiene Level 2
✔ Dysphagia Awareness & IDDSI Training
If you already have appropriate current certificates, please provide details when applying.
Experienced Chef but Need to Update Your Training?
If you’re an experienced care-home chef who meets our other requirements, don’t be discouraged from applying simply because one of these courses needs completing or updating.
ASL Catering Agency is linked with FlexiLearnHub, our specialist online training platform for the care and catering sectors.
This means we may be able to assist suitable experienced chefs with relevant training through FlexiLearnHub.
Tell Karen what training you currently hold when you apply.
Food Safety & Hygiene Level 2
Good food-safety practices are fundamental to professional care-home catering.
Chefs need appropriate knowledge of areas including food handling, personal hygiene, cleaning, contamination prevention, temperature control and safe food storage.
Relevant online training is available through FlexiLearnHub:
Food Safety & Hygiene Level 2 – FlexiLearnHub
Dysphagia Awareness & IDDSI Training
Care-home chefs may prepare meals for residents who have swallowing difficulties and professionally assessed requirements for texture-modified food.
Where an individual has an IDDSI requirement, food needs to be prepared according to the resident’s documented requirements and the specified texture level.
Understanding the principles behind dysphagia and the IDDSI Framework is therefore particularly valuable for chefs working within the care sector.
Relevant specialist training is available through FlexiLearnHub:
Dysphagia Awareness & IDDSI Training – FlexiLearnHub
Further information is available here:
IDDSI & Dysphagia Awareness Training – FlexiLearnHub
Food Allergen Awareness
Allergen management is another important responsibility for care-home catering teams.
Chefs need to understand the importance of accurate ingredient information, avoiding allergen cross-contact and following the dietary information supplied for each resident.
FlexiLearnHub provides further training and information covering allergen awareness:

Remember: if you’re an experienced care-home chef but one of these training areas needs updating, tell us when you apply.
Areas Across Manchester & Greater Manchester
We’re building our chef network across Manchester and the wider Greater Manchester area.
Depending on client demand, this may include assignments in and around:
- Manchester
- Salford
- Stockport
- Trafford
- Tameside
- Oldham
- Rochdale
- Bury
- Bolton
- Wigan
Individual assignments will vary, and chefs will always need to consider whether the location and travelling distance are suitable for them.
Having your own reliable transport is particularly valuable because it increases the range of assignments you may realistically be able to reach.
What Type of Care Home Chef Work Is Available?
Our clients’ requirements can vary considerably.
Opportunities may include:
- Relief chef assignments
- Temporary chef cover
- Sickness cover
- Holiday cover
- Weekend assignments
- Weekday work
- Short-notice cover
- Emergency catering support
- Longer-term temporary placements
Some chefs enjoy agency work because it provides the opportunity to work in different environments rather than remaining within one kitchen.
However, the availability of assignments depends on client demand and individual suitability.
Registration with ASL does not guarantee any particular number of shifts or working hours.
What Makes a Good ASL Relief Chef?
Technical cooking ability matters, but a successful relief chef needs more than culinary skills.
Walking into a kitchen you’ve never worked in before requires adaptability.
Check Before You Cook
An experienced care-home relief chef should establish the information needed to operate safely within that particular home.
Depending on the assignment, this may include checking:
- Resident dietary information
- Food-allergen information
- Dysphagia requirements
- IDDSI levels
- Current menus
- Meal-service times
- Kitchen procedures
- Temperature records
- Cleaning systems
- Stock availability
- Deliveries
- Handover information
A relief chef should never assume that procedures will be identical simply because they have worked in another care home.
Every home and every group of residents is different.
Understand Who You Are Cooking For
Care-home catering isn’t anonymous mass catering.
Behind every dietary instruction is an individual resident.
That means professional chefs need to appreciate the importance of safety, dignity, choice, nutrition and consistency.
A resident who requires a particular texture or allergen-controlled meal should receive food prepared according to their documented requirements.
This resident-focused approach is one of the reasons we specifically recruit chefs with previous care-sector experience.
Why Join ASL Catering Agency?
ASL Catering Agency Ltd specialises in catering recruitment for the care sector.
We support residential care homes and nursing homes requiring experienced professional chefs, including temporary and relief cover.
Because care catering is a specialist area for us, we understand the difference between recruiting a general chef and recruiting someone suitable for a care environment.
We’re looking to develop long-term relationships with reliable chefs who understand our clients and the standards expected of them.
