Are you an experienced care home chef in Liverpool or Wirral looking for flexible relief or temporary work opportunities?
ASL Catering Agency Ltd is expanding our network of experienced care-home chefs to support residential care homes and nursing homes across Liverpool, Wirral and surrounding areas.
We are specifically looking for chefs who already have substantial experience working within care-home kitchens and understand the additional responsibilities involved when preparing meals for older people and other individuals receiving care.
Previous care-home chef experience is essential.
We are also looking for chefs with their own reliable transport, allowing them to travel independently to different client assignments.
ASL employs PAYE chefs rather than freelance or self-employed chefs.
If you have the experience we’re looking for, we’d like to hear from you.

Why Care Home Catering Experience Matters
Care-home catering requires a different approach from many traditional hospitality environments.
The chef isn’t simply preparing a menu for customers choosing what they would like to eat. Within a care environment, individual residents may have specific dietary, nutritional or texture requirements that need to be followed carefully.
Depending on the residents within a particular home, this can include:
- Food allergies and intolerances
- Dysphagia
- IDDSI texture levels
- Fortified meals
- Modified portions
- Vegetarian alternatives
- Cultural or religious dietary requirements
- Individual food preferences
- Nutritional requirements
- Dementia-related eating difficulties
- Other documented specialist diets
A professional care-home chef needs to understand the importance of checking the information provided for each resident rather than making assumptions.
This specialist experience is one of the reasons ASL focuses on recruiting chefs who have already worked successfully within care environments. ASL’s existing care-home recruitment service specifically covers experienced chefs for residential and nursing homes, including Liverpool. ASL Catering
Care Home, Residential & Nursing Home Chef Recruitment – ASL Catering Agency
What We Are Looking For in Liverpool & Wirral
We want to hear from experienced professionals who understand what is expected when representing a specialist catering agency within a care environment.
Substantial Previous Care Home Chef Experience
Applicants must have genuine previous experience working as a chef within care homes, residential homes or nursing homes.
For this particular recruitment campaign, general restaurant, hotel, pub or event-catering experience alone isn’t sufficient.
We need chefs who understand care-home kitchens, specialist diets and the importance of following individual resident information.
Your Own Reliable Transport
Own reliable transport is essential.
Assignments can be at different client locations and shift times may make public transport impractical.
This is particularly relevant when working across Liverpool, Wirral and surrounding areas because individual assignments may require travelling to different care homes.
You should therefore be able to travel independently and reliably to the assignments you accept.
Enhanced DBS
Applicants should hold an appropriate current Enhanced DBS certificate, subject to ASL Catering Agency’s normal recruitment and compliance procedures.
Our existing chef-network requirements include Enhanced DBS status as part of the information candidates should provide when registering. ASL Catering
Right to Work in the UK
All applicants must have the appropriate right to work in the UK and complete the relevant pre-employment checks before commencing work with ASL.
Reliability and Professionalism
Reliability is extremely important.
When a care home needs an agency chef because of sickness, annual leave or a staffing shortage, it needs someone it can depend upon.
We therefore look for chefs who demonstrate:
- Good punctuality
- Excellent reliability
- Professional presentation
- Clear communication
- Strong food-hygiene standards
- Respect for residents
- Respect for permanent care-home staff
- Ability to follow site procedures
- Confidence working independently where appropriate
- A professional approach to every assignment
Essential Training for Care Home Chefs
Alongside genuine practical experience, we’re particularly interested in chefs who have appropriate training covering:
✔ Food Safety & Hygiene Level 2
If you already have appropriate current training, please provide details when applying.
Food Safety & Hygiene Level 2
Safe food preparation is fundamental in every professional kitchen and especially important when catering for potentially vulnerable residents.
Care-home chefs should understand good practice involving food handling, personal hygiene, safe storage, temperature control, cleaning and contamination prevention.
FlexiLearnHub’s current Food Safety & Hygiene Level 2 Training is CPD accredited and specifically includes care-home and catering staff among the intended learners. Flexilearn Hub

Dysphagia Awareness & IDDSI Training
Care-home chefs may be responsible for preparing food for residents with swallowing difficulties.
Where a resident has been professionally assessed as requiring a particular texture, chefs need to follow the individual’s documented requirements carefully.
Understanding dysphagia and the IDDSI Framework is therefore particularly relevant within care-home catering.
FlexiLearnHub’s current Dysphagia Awareness & IDDSI course is CPD accredited and designed for care-home environments. Flexilearn Hub

There is also a dedicated information page explaining IDDSI and dysphagia training:

Food Allergen Awareness
Allergen awareness is another important element of professional care-home catering.
Chefs need to understand the importance of accurate ingredient information, preventing allergen cross-contact and following the individual dietary information provided by the care home.
FlexiLearnHub’s current Allergen Awareness Training is CPD accredited and covers allergen risks, cross-contact prevention, communication and safe working practices. Flexilearn Hub

Experienced Chef but Need to Update Your Training?
If you’re an experienced care-home chef who meets our other recruitment requirements, please don’t be put off applying simply because one of these training areas needs completing or updating.
ASL Catering Agency works alongside our online training platform, FlexiLearnHub.
For suitable experienced candidates, ASL may be able to assist with relevant training through FlexiLearnHub.
When you contact Karen, tell us which training and certificates you currently hold and whether anything needs updating.

- Holiday cover
- Sickness cover
- Weekend assignments
- Weekday assignments
- Short-notice cover
- Emergency chef cover

Working as a Relief Chef in a Care Home
A good relief chef needs to be adaptable.
You may be entering a kitchen you’ve never worked in before, with residents you’ve never catered for previously.
That means one of the first responsibilities is understanding how that particular kitchen operates.
Check the Information Before Starting Service
Depending on the home and assignment, an experienced relief chef may need to establish:
- Resident dietary requirements
- Food-allergen information
- Dysphagia requirements
- IDDSI levels
- Current menus
- Portion requirements
- Meal-service times
- Food-temperature procedures
- Cleaning procedures
- Stock availability
- Deliveries
- Kitchen records
- Handover information
Experience matters because a professional relief chef should know what information needs checking and when to ask questions.
Remember the Resident Behind the Meal
Care-home catering is ultimately about people.
A texture-modified meal isn’t simply a different version of today’s menu. It may be part of an individual resident’s documented requirements.
An allergen-controlled meal isn’t simply a preference. Getting the information wrong can have serious consequences.
Good care-home chefs therefore combine catering ability with attention to detail, dignity, safety, nutrition and consistency.
That’s the type of chef we’re looking for.
